Frequently Asked Questions

Learn more about our clinic so you can decide if it's the right program for you!

Is this clinic only for people who live in Seattle?

Our program is based in Seattle and that is where the clinic is held. Anyone is welcome to enroll in our program, but he or she will have to travel to Seattle. There are a number of programs similar to ours across the country and globe. A web search for fear of flying help in your location would be a good start. You can also check out our "More Resources" page for information on some of our sister clinics.

2

How much does the clinic cost?

The fee for the clinic is $745. There is a $50 discount if you register early (at least one month prior to the clinic start date), which brings the fee down to $695.

The clinic is a certified 501(c)(3) (non-profit) organization staffed strictly by volunteers. Our volunteers donate all of their time to the clinic and receive no compensation. The clinic fee simply covers our costs involved in the operation of the clinic.

3

Where is the clinic held?

The clinic is held at the Alaska Airlines Hub building just south of SeaTac Airport. We also take a field trip during the clinic to the Alaska Airlines maintenance hangar.

4

What can I expect at the clinic?

The clinic consists of lectures on topics such as weather, turbulence, and how aviation is portrayed in the media. You will learn about pilot and flight attendant training, aircraft maintenance and air traffic control, as well as hear testimonials from clinic graduates. We will help guide you through various relaxation techniques to help with anxiety,

The clinic is a mixture of lecture and "hands on" field trips: One to the Alaska Airlines maintenance hangar where you will get to walk around, touch and board a stationary aircraft. The other, the SeaTac control tower where you will get to visit the cab of the tower and see air traffic controllers at work*. The last day of the clinic is the graduation flight and celebratory luncheon afterward.

5

How many participants are in a typical clinic?

The number of clients per clinic can vary. We've had as many as 20 and as few as 10. We cap the clinic at 20 in order to provide a more intimate and personalized experience.

6

What is the schedule like at the clinic?

The clinic is held over the course of 4 days (2 consecutive weekends). We typically start at 8:30 or 9:00am and end at 5pm.

7

Do we actually fly somewhere as part of the clinic?

Yes! On the last day of the clinic we take our graduation flight. This is a great opportunity for our clients to put into practice all they have learned during the clinic with staff sitting near them to answer any questions and provide support. We typically fly from Seattle to Spokane and back (which is less than an hour each way). Occasionally, we might fly to the Bay Area and back (San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Sacramento) which are slightly longer flights at 1.5 hours each way. We do everything possible to ensure that we fly on jets* (Boeing 737s or Airbus 320s), and we sit together as a group.

*Ultimately, the airline reserves the right to swap equipment, so there is always a small chance our graduation flight may be on a smaller, regional aircraft (which are just as safe as the bigger jets, just smaller). To date we have not experienced an aircraft swap to a smaller plane.

8

What if I want to take the clinic but I don't want to go on the graduation flight?

The cost of the graduation flight is built into the cost of the clinic. While you are not required to take the graduation flight, it is strongly encouraged as it will be the only chance you have to fly with clinic staff and fellow clients, both of whom provide a great deal of support.

If you choose not to fly, the ticket is still yours to use. Per airline rules, the value of the ticket must be used within one year of its issue date.

9

Are meals provided at the clinic?

No, with the exception of the last day. There is a lunch room near the classroom with vending machines that sell both fresh and shelf-stable items. There are also several restaurants nearby (within walking distance). You are welcome to bring your own lunch/snacks as well. The lunch room has refrigerators and microwaves we can use.

On the last day of the clinic, after the graduation flight, there will be a celebratory luncheon.

If you would like to invite someone to the post-flight meal (a spouse, significant other, etc.) there is a small, nominal fee for each additional person.

10

Is there a minimum age requirement to take the clinic?

Yes. Clients must be at least 18 years of age.

11

What happens if I register and pay for a clinic but then can't attend?

If you register and pay for a clinic but then cannot attend, we can offer you a spot in the next clinic. Monetary refunds for the clinic fee are not offered, and repeated roll-overs to future clinics are not permitted.

12

Can couples take the clinic together?

Generally speaking, no. If only one member of the couple is struggling with the fear of flying, that member would need to take the clinic independent of a partner. If both members of the couple are struggling with the fear of flying, then taking the clinic together might be an option. If you are a couple and wanting to take the clinic as such, please contact us via email and fill us in on the details. We can then coordinate a phone consultation in order to determine the best way to proceed so that all parties involved achieve maximum benefit from our program.
